Glossary of commonly used terms:

APC - Article Processing Charge

The cost to be paid by the author or the institution for publication in open access. Usually, everything related to payment is handled by the submitting corresponding author, who works with the publisher on behalf of all the authors of the work in the process from submission to publication of the article.

BPC - Book Processing Charge

The cost to be paid by the author or the institution for publishing the monograph in open access.

Corresponding author, submitting corresponding author

In open access publishing, the corresponding author is the one who, in agreement with all the authors, participates in the whole process from submission to publication on the publisher's platform, arranges all the payment of any publication costs, or arranges for the use of a discount or voucher for free publication. Several corresponding authors may be listed on a single article, usually with an explanation of their role in the creation of the work (responsible for the idea, the research process, the acquisition and processing of the data, etc.). The role of corresponding author should also not be simply identified with that of first or lead author.

CPC/BCPC - Chapter/Book Chapter Processing Charge

The cost to be paid by the author or the institution for publishing a chapter in an open access monograph.

Creative Commons

is a non-profit organisation working to increase the number of copyright works made available to others for legal distribution and use. The project offers licences that specify the terms of use of works. Slovenian translations of Creative Commons licences >>

DORA Declaration

The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) was launched in 2012 in San Francisco. The DORA aims for a system of research assessment in which the content of a piece of research is more important than where it is published (for example, the title of a scientific journal).

Diamond Open Access

Diamond Open Access is a not-for-profit journal that does not charge readers for subscriptions or authors for publication. In Diamond journals, articles are made openly available on the journal's website immediately after peer review.

Hybrid magazines

Hybrid journals are journals that have retained subscriptions while allowing authors to publish an article in open access by paying an article processing charge (APC). A single article in an otherwise subscription journal is thus open access.

Plan S

Plan S is an open access publishing initiative. The initiative was announced by the CoAlicija S, a group of national funders and European and international research organisations.

Open Access

Open access means that the full text of a publication is freely available on the World Wide Web, on the publisher's website or in a repository. Copyright and related rights are retained by the authors or their institutions, and permitted and unauthorised uses of the article are indicated by licences, for example Creative Commons.

Post-print (pre-press)

This is the term used to describe the author's final, peer-reviewed version of an Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) that has been accepted for publication in a scientific journal. It contains all the editorial corrections (peer review) but lacks the graphic elements and design of the publisher.

Pre-print

This term refers to the author's original manuscript submitted to the journal for publication. The content has not been peer reviewed.

RRS - Rights Retention Strategy

The RRS, or Copyright Preservation Strategy, was created by the members of CoAlicija S to enable researchers, even in cases where there is no possibility of publishing in Gold Open Access, to publish results from publicly funded research in journals of their choice, even if subscription journals, but still to meet funders' requirements for immediate open access: store the author's final, peer-reviewed version of the article (AAM) under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence with no time lag for accessibility in the repository.

VoR - Version of Record

The original, published article on the publisher's platform after the peer review process has been completed and finalised in terms of design and layout according to the journal's or publisher's guidelines and practices.

Green Open Access (Green OA)

Green Open Access indicates the deposit of the author's final, peer-reviewed version of an article (preprint - postprint, also AAM), accepted for publication in a subscription scientific journal, in an institutional repository, subject to copyright considerations. The policies of publishers of subscription scholarly journals regarding deposit in repositories are collected on the website Sherpa Romeo.

Gold Open Access (Gold OA)

Indicates publication in open access journals. Open access journals allow access to articles without a subscription fee and use a copyright model whereby the author retains the material copyright and further use is indicated by licences such as Creative Commons. Publication can be free for the author (often referred to as Diamond OD) or require payment of an article processing charge (APC).
