Evaluating scientific research work

While the general perception in the Open Access era was that these were unverified, uncensored publications, we now know that this is not the case. Open access scientific journals are equally subject to the rules of scientific communication, i.e. peer review, quality editorial boards, regular publication. It is also because of their quality that more and more of them are included in databases Web of Science, Scopus and placed in DOAJ or DOAB list.

Although there is much talk of establishing a new evaluation system based primarily on the content of the publication, the current evaluation system is still based on the classic impact factor evaluation. Journal Citation Reports  JCR or Source Normalized Impact per Paper SNIP-a. When checking the journal factor, we need to pay attention to the year in which the journal article was published, as the journal factor for the same year is taken into account, and to false, misleading metrics, often with very similar names. Journal Citation Reports  JCR and/or Source Normalized Impact per Paper SNIP (e.g. Journal Impact Factor (JIF), Journal Impact Factor, JIF, SIF, ISI,...)

In Slovenia, however, the evaluation for ARRS calls for proposals (co-funding of research activities, obtaining a scientific title) is based on the criteria of the ARRS, which publishes lists every year. International bibliographic databases used for the categorisation of scientific publications (BIBLIO-A), Journals not included in international bibliographic databases but taken into account in the categorisation of scientific publications (BIBLIO-B), International publishers taken into account for the categorisation of scientific publications (BIBLIO-C) and Completed scientific database or corpus to be taken into account for the categorisation of scientific publications (BIBLIO-D).

Each university and higher education institution also has its own criteria for academic degrees and habilitation.

For the University of Maribor read more Bibliographical performance indicators for election to a degree at UM and Annex 1 of the Criteria for the election to the titles of higher education teachers and higher education associates UPB 2.
